A Word From The Owner

We fix it right, not just patch it

“Most decks we're called to repair have a surface problem hiding a frame problem. We check the structure first — ledger, posts, footings — then fix what's actually failing instead of slapping new boards over a soft frame. That's us in the photo. Safe and honest, every time.”

What We Fix

Deck repair & resurfacing

From a few rotted boards and a wobbly railing to a full resurface over a sound frame — one family crew diagnoses what's really going on and brings your deck back to safe, code-built, like-new condition.

Structural inspection first

We check the ledger, posts, and footings before anything else — and tell you honestly whether to repair, resurface, or rebuild.

Rotted board replacement

Swap out soft, splintered, or cracked boards and match them in — composite or wood — for a safe, clean surface again.

Resurface over a sound frame

Strip the old deck and install new composite or wood boards and railings on a solid existing structure — like-new for less.

Railing & stair repair

Re-secure or rebuild wobbly, non-code railings and stairs so the deck is safe and passes inspection again.

Ledger & footing fixes

Repair or replace a failing ledger — the leading cause of deck collapse — and correct undersized or sinking footings.

Hardware & sealing

Replace corroded nails and connectors with proper hardware, and clean and reseal wood decks to extend their life.

In Depth

When to repair, resurface, or rebuild your NJ deck

Not every aging deck needs to be torn down — but a lot of them aren't as sound as they look. Father & Sons repairs, resurfaces, and rebuilds decks across New Jersey, and the first thing we do on every call is inspect the structure, not just the surface. Soft or splintered boards, a wobbly railing, popped nails, or a bouncy feel are symptoms; the cause is usually underneath — a rotted ledger, undersized or sinking footings, corroded fasteners, or framing that was never built to code.

Once we know what's actually going on, we'll give you the honest call. If the frame is solid, properly flashed, and to code, a resurface (re-decking) is often the best value — we strip the old boards and railings and install new composite or wood on top of the existing structure, giving you a like-new deck for a fraction of a full rebuild. If the frame is compromised, we'll tell you straight: replacing boards over a failing structure is unsafe and a waste of money, and a partial or full rebuild is the right move. We won't sell you a teardown you don't need, and we won't put a band-aid on something dangerous.

Common repairs we handle include rotted or splintered board replacement, fixing wobbly or non-code railings and stairs, re-securing or replacing a failing ledger (the #1 cause of deck collapses), correcting or adding footings, swapping corroded hardware for proper connectors, and resealing wood decks. Where the deck is salvageable, we bring it back to safe, code-built condition; where it's not, we rebuild it right.

Father & Sons has worked on decks across North Jersey since 1972, so we've seen how they fail and how to fix them. Repairs are owner-supervised, built by the same crew that quotes them, with a written price that doesn't move. Take $1,000 off qualifying work; call for a free on-site inspection.

They stuck to the quote — no surprise charges — and actually finished ahead of schedule. The framing and railing work is clearly a notch above what I'd seen from other quotes.

Common Questions

Deck Repair & Resurfacing FAQs

Straight answers, no sales scripts. Anything else — just call.

Call (201) 790-3303

How much does deck repair cost in NJ?

Repairs range widely — replacing a few boards or a railing section is modest, while a resurface or a ledger/footing repair costs more. We give a free on-site inspection and an honest written estimate, and you can take $1,000 off qualifying larger projects like a full resurface.

Should I repair, resurface, or replace my deck?

It depends on the frame. If the structure is sound, properly flashed, and to code, a resurface (new boards on the existing frame) is often the best value. If the frame is rotted, undersized, or unsafe, replacing boards over it is dangerous — a partial or full rebuild is the right move. We inspect first and tell you straight.

What is deck resurfacing (re-decking)?

Resurfacing means stripping off the old deck boards and railings and installing new composite or wood on top of your existing, sound frame. You get a like-new deck surface for a fraction of a full rebuild — as long as the structure underneath is solid, which we verify first.

Is my old deck safe?

Many older decks have hidden issues — a rotted or improperly attached ledger (the #1 cause of deck collapses), undersized footings, or corroded fasteners. We do a structural inspection and tell you exactly what's safe, what needs repair, and what doesn't. If it's dangerous, we won't just patch it.

Can you replace just the rotted boards?

Yes — if the frame is sound, we can replace soft, splintered, or cracked boards and match them in. We'll also check why they rotted (often a drainage or flashing issue) so the repair actually lasts.

Can you fix a wobbly railing or bouncy deck?

Yes. A wobbly railing usually means loose or under-built posts; a bouncy deck usually means joist or footing problems. We diagnose the real cause and fix it to code so the deck is solid and safe, not just temporarily tightened.

Do deck repairs need a permit in NJ?

Cosmetic board swaps often don't, but structural work — ledgers, footings, stairs, railings, or a resurface — usually does. We handle any required permits and inspections and bring the work up to NJ code.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes — a fully licensed, bonded, and insured NJ home improvement contractor, family-owned and operating since 1972 out of North Jersey.
