Our crew, mid-buildA Word From The Owner
Safe, square, and inspection-ready
“Railings and stairs are where code is strictest and where a lot of decks fail inspection. We set posts solid, hit every spacing and height requirement, and build stairs that are even, quiet, and square. That's us in the photo. Done right the first time.”

In Depth
Railings and stairs: where deck safety is won or lost
Railings and stairs are the part of a deck that people touch every day — and the part building inspectors scrutinize hardest. Baluster spacing, rail height, post strength, graspable handrails, and stair rise-and-run are all governed by NJ code for good reason: it's where falls happen. Father & Sons builds and replaces deck railings and stairs across New Jersey that are safe, solid, and built to pass inspection the first time.
On materials, you have real choices and we'll walk you through them. Aluminum railing is strong, powder-coated, and virtually maintenance-free. Cable railing keeps your view wide open and looks clean and modern — but it has to be tensioned and framed correctly to stay taut and code-compliant. Composite railing matches a composite deck for a seamless, no-paint finish. Wood railing brings classic warmth. Each system has different installation demands, and we install them all to the manufacturer's spec and to code.
Stairs are deceptively technical. Every step has to be consistent in rise and run, the stringers have to be sized and supported correctly, landings have to be solid and to code, and the whole run has to feel even and quiet underfoot — no bounce, no creak, no surprise step that trips people. We build custom stairs, multi-landing runs, and code-compliant handrails that are square and dependable, whether it's a single step down to a patio or a tall run to a raised deck.
Father & Sons has been a family-owned North Jersey contractor since 1972. Railings and stairs are owner-supervised, built by the same crew that quotes them, permitted, and inspected — written price that doesn't move. Take $1,000 off qualifying work; call for a free measure.

Common Questions
Railings & Custom Stairs FAQs
Straight answers, no sales scripts. Anything else — just call.
Call (201) 790-3303How much do new deck railings cost in NJ?
Railing cost depends on the linear footage, material (aluminum, cable, composite, or wood), and the number of stairs. Aluminum and wood are typically the most affordable; cable railing costs more for the hardware and tensioning. We give free written estimates and you can take $1,000 off qualifying projects.
Is cable railing code-compliant in NJ?
Yes — when it's installed correctly. Cable railing has to be framed and tensioned so the cables stay taut and within the required spacing, and the posts and end framing have to be strong enough to hold that tension. We build it to code so it passes inspection and stays tight.
Can you replace just my railings or just my stairs?
Absolutely. If your deck surface and frame are sound, we can replace failing or outdated railings and rebuild unsafe stairs without redoing the whole deck — a common, high-impact upgrade.
Why do railings and stairs fail inspection?
Usually baluster spacing that's too wide, rail height that's wrong, posts that aren't anchored strongly enough, missing graspable handrails, or inconsistent stair rise-and-run. We hit every one of these requirements so it passes the first time.
What railing material needs the least maintenance?
Powder-coated aluminum and composite railing are the lowest-maintenance — no painting or sealing, just an occasional wash. Cable is low-maintenance too but should be checked for tension periodically. We'll match the material to how hands-off you want to be.
Can you build custom or multi-landing stairs?
Yes — we build everything from a single step down to a patio to tall, multi-landing stair runs, all with correctly sized stringers, solid landings, and code-compliant handrails that feel even and quiet underfoot.
Do railings and stairs need a permit?
Structural stair and railing work generally falls under the deck permit and inspection. We handle the permitting and build to NJ code so it's signed off properly.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — a fully licensed, bonded, and insured NJ home improvement contractor, family-owned since 1972.
